Hispanic Studies at Ä¢¹½TV

Every Spanish speaker’s path is unique; every path has a home in the Hispanic Studies Department at Ä¢¹½TV. Whether you are enrolling in your first language class, preparing for advanced seminars, or reconnecting with your heritage language, our program meets you where you are.

Rooted in Ä¢¹½TV’s liberal arts mission, we treat language learning as both an essential skill and as a gateway to critical inquiry, cultural humility, and opportunities for global leadership and service. Our community immerses you in the vibrant cultural traditions and practices of the Spanish-speaking world, preparing you to more fully interact with the second-most spoken language in the U.S. and the fourth worldwide.

Beyond the acquisition of foundational Spanish language skills, you will learn:

  • to analyze rich literary and cultural expressions,
  • to think critically about historically marginalized voices,
  • to examine bilingualism from cognitive and social perspectives,
  • to understand how language shapes power and identity.

Guided by dedicated faculty mentorship, you will explore Latin American, U.S. Latinx, and Iberian social dynamics while engaging in partnerships with Spanish-speaking communities locally and internationally. In these shared spaces, knowledge flows both ways: as you apply your evolving insights, you also listen, learn, and collaborate to build the cross-cultural skills needed to engage more thoughtfully with an ever-globalized world.

Step into a lively, engaged community celebrating Hispanic cultures through impactful civic involvement.

Come discover your place in the Spanish-speaking world!

Please contact Prof. Kyra Kietrys, department chair, with general questions or Prof. Brandon Cannon, language coordinator, with questions about the language placement exam.
